Basic Supplies:

Paint... transparent watercolor tubes... no hard cakes.
(“I like Winsor Newton best, however, if you are just starting, Cottman will do and is less expensive...”

Colors:

All are transparent colors: Ultra Marine, Cerulean Blue, Cobalt Blue, Prussian Blue, Olive Green, Hookers Green dark, Winsor Violet, New Gamgoge, Lemon Yellow or Cad. Yellow, Naples Yellow, Raw Umber, Burnt Umber, Sepia, Payne's Grey and Permanent White (gouache)

Palette: Large covered palette similar to “Pike Palette”

Brushes:

  • Flats: 1/2", 1", 1-1/2"
  • Rounds: no. 4, 6, 8, 12
  • Rigger: no. 2 or 4

(“these can all be synthetic... less expensive. Real Sable brushes are nice but don't sell your car to buy them!”)

Water Container and Pencils:

  • no. 2 soft pencils (“I like Dixon Ticonderoga”) available at Office Max and a 1 B soft pencil.
  • Kneaded eraser
  • Masking Tape 3/4”

Paper:

Winsor-Newton or Arches 140 Cold Press (no blocks)
Board to hold paper while painting... can be 1'4" ply or similar... approx 18x24
